With dental implants, patients can secure their denture prosthetics to provide a strong and stable bite. These titanium posts are able to anchor in your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, as titanium is a biocompatible material. Once in your bone, the implant will integrate with your jaw to create an incredibly strong connection. Using these implants, we then secure a denture restoration to restore your smile! However, there are various implant denture models to choose from, each with its own design and functionality. Patients often find themselves wondering: Are implant supported dentures fixed or removable? At the Mini Dental Implant Center of America in Springfield, MO, we’re here to answer your questions!
Our Implant Supported Dentures in Springfield, MO
At our office, we use mini dental implants to secure your smile. These implants are smaller than their more conventional counterparts, but with the same strength and stability. By placing these implants in your jawbone, we provide patients like you with faster recovery times, minimal discomfort, and a more affordable solution!
With mini dental implants, we offer two types of denture restorations.
- Overdentures: Like traditional dentures, this prosthetic has a denture base that mimics the appearance of your gums. However, rather than relying solely on your gums for support, it relies on 4 to 8 mini implants!
- Roundhouse bridges: A roundhouse bridge is a much sleeker restoration, as it requires less of the traditional denture base. Instead, it follows the curve of your jawbone to provide a natural-looking restoration! Depending on its removability, your roundhouse bridge either uses 6 to 10 mini implants or 10 to 12.
Are Implant Supported Dentures Fixed or Removable?
Both fixed and removable options are excellent solutions.
The decision between the two options depends on several factors, including the amount of available bone, the number of implants we use, and your long-term and financial goals.
An overdenture, for example, is fully removable. To maintain it, you’ll need to take it out at least twice a day for cleaning. Then, during your routine dental visits, we will need to replace the O-rings that allow you to snap your denture on and off. Strong and intact O-rings are essential for maintaining a secure fit as they connect your prosthetic to your implants.
Roundhouse bridges, however, are more fixed solutions.
A semi-removable roundhouse bridge, like the name suggests, typically stays on your implants. Only at routine dental visits will we remove this denture to ensure that your gums and implants are still healthy!
In contrast, a non-removable roundhouse bridge is cemented in place, never to come out. Rather than removing it to clean your prosthetic, we encourage patients to use a Waterpik and a toothbrush, similar to caring for natural teeth.
With fixed solutions, patients don’t have to worry about daily or constant maintenance. Simply take care of your denture as you would your natural smile, and visit us routinely for a professional cleaning and checkup.
