You may already know that you want dental implants to support your new teeth. The part you haven’t figured out is what happens next. Do you want a denture that snaps securely into place but still comes out when you need it to? Or are you looking for fixed teeth that stay in your mouth? At The Mini Dental Implant Center of America in Springfield, MO, we use mini dental implants for both options. Dr. Thomas Baggett helps patients compare them just about every day. One of the first things he tells patients is that the differences don’t end with whether they come out. Think about how you want to clean your teeth, how much stability you are looking for, and how much maintenance you are comfortable with over time.
If you don’t know the answers yet, you’re in good company. There is plenty to think through, and Dr. Baggett can help you make sense of the differences and make the choice easier.
How Are Fixed Teeth Different From Snap-In Dentures?
Mini dental implants can support both snap-in dentures and fixed teeth. With a snap-in denture, you can attach and remove your teeth yourself. With fixed teeth, your restoration stays connected to the implants and remains in your mouth.
| Questions to ask | Snap-in dentures | Fixed teeth |
|---|---|---|
| Can I remove them? | Yes. You snap the denture on and off yourself. | Your new teeth are secured to the mini implants and remain in place. |
| How do I clean them? | You remove the denture for daily cleaning. | You clean around and under your teeth while they remain in place. |
| How many mini implants do I need? | Typically 4 implants for a lower denture and 6 implants for an upper denture. | Generally 6–12 implants, depending on the type of fixed restoration. |
| Can I upgrade my current denture? | If your current denture is in good condition and fits properly, Dr. Baggett may be able to modify it to attach to mini implants. | No. With fixed teeth, you receive a new zirconia roundhouse bridge made for your mini implants. |
| What should I know about cost? | More economical implant-denture option | More implants and a new zirconia bridge increase the cost. |
Dr. Baggett offers two types of fixed teeth. The first, a Fix-on-Six® roundhouse bridge stays in your mouth, but Dr. Baggett can remove it when needed for professional cleaning and maintenance. Second, a cemented roundhouse bridge takes fixed one step further. Dr. Baggett permanently cements the restoration in place, so neither you nor the dental team routinely removes it for cleaning.

What Do You Want From Your Implant Denture?
A good starting point in figuring out if fixed teeth are right for you is to think about what you want your new teeth to change. Dr. Baggett may start by asking a couple of straightforward questions.
What are you tired of dealing with now?
A loose denture can affect more than what you eat. Maybe you reach for adhesive every morning, avoid certain foods, or catch yourself wondering if your denture will move when you talk or laugh. After dealing with those little interruptions day after day, you may be ready for teeth you don’t have to think about quite so much.
Both snap-in dentures and fixed teeth use mini implants for support, so either option can provide a major change from a loose conventional denture. Where your answer becomes especially helpful is in understanding what you want to leave behind. If your biggest concern is movement, a snap-in denture may give you the security you’re missing. If you’re ready to leave removable teeth behind altogether, fixed teeth may be closer to what you have in mind.
How do you want to care for your new teeth?
Some patients actually like being able to remove their teeth for cleaning. With a snap-in denture, you can see and clean the denture directly and have easy access around your implants. The attachments that hold it securely can wear with use, so Dr. Baggett may need to replace them over time.
Other patients feel very differently about removal. They want their teeth to stay in while they eat, sleep, travel, and go about their day. Fixed teeth give you that experience, but staying in doesn’t mean maintenance-free. You still need to clean around the implants and underneath the bridge, and keep up with professional care.
