Mini dental implants have a one-piece design, but this structure isn’t a new concept. In fact, most of the earliest dental implants were only one piece. Over the years, two-piece implants were developed and marketed as “more successful”, but our one-piece implants stand the test of time.

Conventional implants have two main components, the screw and the abutment. The screw portion embeds in your jawbone, while the abutment is attached later. The connector piece allows your restorations to secure to your implants, creating a stable tooth replacement.

However, because the two components are separate, there is some wiggle room. Some patients may find that their restoration eventually comes loose, as the abutment loosens on the implant. And in the spaces between components, bacteria may hide and build up over time.

Peri-implantitis is a bacterial plaque buildup that starts at the base of an implant, but may spread throughout your mouth. Similar to regular gum disease, this infection causes inflammation of the gums and the eventual deterioration of gum and bone tissue.

Without treatment, peri-implantitis will cause lasting damage to your jaw structure. Over time, peri-implantitis may contribute to implant failure if the implant no longer has enough bone support.
